One hint that "new" or small tubers are ready for harvesting in mid-season is when the plants are flowering. I don't like to take more than one tuber from each plant so plenty are left behind to grow to a good size. Good luck with your potato hunt, Phil!

In midseason, can I harvest some potatoes if I can reach them through the little door at the base of the growing bag so that the plant can continue to grow?

No, Lisa, the potato plant will die back (turn brown and wither) when the potatoes are ready. I remove the flowers as soon as they appear, thinking the more energy the plant is putting into flower and seed production the less is going into tuber (potato) making. What kind are you growing and where are you located?

If the potato plant has flowers on it does that mean it's time to harvest?

Great info, so much so, when I blogged about potatoes, I included your link. My customers like info and sometimes grow their own veggies too. Thanks so much.

Are you growing your own potatoes, Pat? I have some planted in a grow bag, as well as in my veggie garden. The bag has a little door at the base which allows you to reach in and feel around for new potatoes in mid-season. It's just about time to do that here in the northeast.

I support suggestion to grow Russian Banana fingerlings. Not only does the "waxy" nature make for excellent potato salad, but they make great - very tasty - mashed potatoes.
